The West Coast of South Africa is a treasure trove of unspoiled beaches, incredible mountain ranges and the most astounding carpet of wild flowers in spring, a sightseeing highlight for visitors. The region stretches from Cape Town as far as the border with the Northern Cape. All along this stretch of coastline is a series of quaint historic towns offering superb restaurants and interesting bars where you can mingle with the local fishermen. An absolute must is a meal at any of the spectacular open-air beach restaurants along Route 27. Make the day trip and feast on fresh yellowtail, cob and snoek (extremely tasty fish), mussels and crayfish, cooked on open fires. Try Muisbosskerm and Bosduifklip close to Lamberts Bay or Breakwater Boma in Saldanha Bay. Just outside Cape Town the hamlet of Darling deserves a visit, especially in September for its Wild Flower and Orchid show and for its locally produced wines. Wine tours and wine tasting can be enjoyed here. A little further up the coast, the West Coast National Park boasts numerous hiking trails and superb spring flowers from the end of July to early September.
