About Addo

Addo, a picturesque town 72km (about an hours' drive) from Port Elizabeth, South Africa's fifth largest city, is world renowned for its magnificent Addo Elephant National Park. The town is the ideal stop over for visitors to the park, providing additional accommodation and various shops were holidaymakers could stock up before visiting the Addo Elephant National Park. Addo is based in the Sundays River Valley and is surrounded by the Zuurberg Mountains, which offer some spectacular hiking- and horse riding trails. It also has an abundance of wildlife and is a true birdwatcher's dream. But the main attraction is undoubtedly the Addo Elephant National Park, proclaimed in 1931 to preserve the once-prolific Cape elephant. Since its expansion the park boasts habitats ranging from coastal dune fields to semi-desert and stretches over a whopping 3,600 km². This means the Addo Elephant National Park not only contains five of South Africa's seven major vegetation zones (biomes) but also houses the so-called "Big 7" (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark) in their natural habitat. It also includes St. Croix Island and Bird Island, home to the world's largest breeding colony of gannets and the second largest breeding colony of African penguins.
