Cape Agulhas

About Cape Agulhas

A true unique experience if you backpack around South Africa is a visit to Cape Agulhas, approximately 200km from Cape Town. It is the southernmost point on the African continent, the official place where the cold Benguela current of the Atlantic Ocean and the strong Agulhas current of the Indian Ocean meet. This tip of Africa is particularly hazardous, notorious for winter storms and massive waves that crash into the rugged and rocky shoreline. It is therefore no surprise that the coastline is a regular graveyard of ships. The impressive red and white striped lighthouse was built in 1848 to aid the early explorers on their passage of the rough seas off Cape Agulhas. It still operates today, making it the second oldest working lighthouse in southern Africa. Seventy-one steps lead up to the top and the building also houses a unique lighthouse museum, the only one of its kind in the country. Close by are the picturesque coastal towns of L'Agulhas, Arniston and Struisbaai and quaint inland stopovers like Bredasdorp (which houses a shipwreck museum), Napier and Elim. Visit the recently proclaimed Agulhas National Park, with its abundant variety of fynbos and 2000 species of indigenous plants, spot the protected African black oystercatcher along the beaches or Southern Right whales that frequent the coast.
