Drakensberg

About Drakensberg

The spectacular Drakensberg (literally translated as Dragon Mountain) Range in the KwaZulu-Natal Province along the southeast coast is what adventure seekers and wildlife lovers would call heaven. The deep gorges, pinnacles, saw-edged ridges, caves, overhangs and balancing rocks form the Great Escarpment and is the main watershed of South Africa. Extending from northeast to southwest for around 1125km it is the highest mountain in South Africa, peaking at Champagne Castle (3376m). Particularly majestic is the northern Drakensberg, where a total of eight rivers rise on the aptly named Mont-aux-Source (mountain of springs) massif, and the central Drakensberg at Giant's Castle and Cathedral Peak. You won't find fresher cleaner mountain air anywhere. Enjoy adventure activities like hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, river crossing and mountain biking. Lovers of gentler sports can try trout fishing, horseback riding and swimming (if you can brave the icy water, that is). The Drakensberg is home to a quarter of the indigenous wildlife in South Africa. You will frequently encounter eland (a large antelope), grey rhebuck, mountain reedbuck, serval cat and jackal. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is a World Heritage Site and extensive floral and wildlife sanctuary. It has about 30 hiking trails, one leading you to the imposing Mont-aux-Sources plateau and the uThukela Falls, where at one stretch the river cascades down a sheer drop of 183 metres, making it South Africa's highest waterfall.
