You'll make a huge mistake it you don't plan a trip to the Garden Route. Along this most magnificent stretch of the south-eastern coastline of South Africa you'll be gob-smacked by the beauty that surrounds you. Here every kind of adventure activity is possible: scuba diving, abseiling, fishing, swimming and bungee jumping... name it, they've got it! The Garden Route starts at the coastal town of Mossel Bay in the Western Cape and winds its way for some 200km to end at the Storms River in the neighbouring Eastern Cape. Along the way it passes beautiful towns such as George, Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley. The vegetation is diverse and ranges from semi-arid valleys to dense forests. Numerous lagoons and lakes are dotted along the way. George is the region's largest town and administrative centre. Oudtshoorn, the 'Capital of the Klein Karoo', is famous for the Cango Caves on its outskirts. This series of accessible caverns and chambers naturally hewn out of limestone are among the top ten most visited South African attractions. The Tsitsikamma Forest National Park is one the most stunning local marine and land attractions, whilst the various nature reserves and protected bays embrace the ecosystems of the area, home to coral reefs, dolphins, seals and the endangered Southern Right whale. Although the most popular exploration of the Garden Route is by car, it is also the site of Africa's last remaining passenger steam train, the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe.
