The Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It is a primary holiday destination in South Africa for many local and international tourists and more than half a million visitors are registered annually. The park has an abundance of wildlife and boasts amongst the greatest species diversity in Africa. More than 140 mammal species can be spotted here, and large populations of zebra, wildebeest and giraffe roam the wilderness. The ultimate prize is to see the Big 5 in their natural habitat: lion (numbering close to 1500), elephant (around 13,600), leopard (estimated at 1000), buffalo (a whopping 27,000) and rhino. All these animals can be viewed on game drives and safaris, in the presence of top-notch game wardens. The Park covers an area of 18,989 square km (7,332 sq miles) and extends 350km (220 miles) from north to south and 60km (37 miles) from east to west. To the west and south are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. The Kruger National Park has 9 main gates that allow entrance to the different rest camps, all with first-class facilities. All the man-made structures – the camps and roads – take up a mere three percent of the area. The rest belongs to nature. In short, a fantastic destination for a true African safari, wildlife spotting and game drives.
