The beautiful mountainous country of Lesotho (say: Le-sue-too) is nestled – island-like – in the middle of South Africa and makes for a fascinating travel detour from its larger neighbour. This leads to superb scenery, endless hiking trails and the chance to explore remote areas on Basotho ponies. The lowland areas (all of which are above 1000m!) offer some craft shopping, while the highlands in the northeast and centre feature towering peaks (over 3000m) and green valleys. Escape the hustle and bustle of the world in Lesotho's remote Sehlabathebe National Park, or chill out in the pleasant capital Maseru, where a slow pace and friendly locals ensure a relaxed stay. Getting around is easy – ordinary hire cars will get you to most places. Public transport is extensive, but remember this is Africa... lots of patience is needed. The best way to explore Lesotho is by hiking or pony trekking from village to village. The Maluti Mountains, with its highest point at Thabana Ntlenyana (3482m), is something to behold. The sources of two of the principal rivers in South Africa, the Gariep and the Thukela, are found here. Lesotho offers an adventure that is rarely experienced in more commercialised destinations around Africa.
