Midlands

About Midlands

Between the Sunshine Coast and the foothills of the Drakensberg lies the sublime region known as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. The main town is Pietermaritzburg, home to quaint antique shops, markets, restaurants, art galleries and museums. This is the town in which the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon starts, and is the beginning or ending point of the world-renowned annual Comrades Marathon. To enjoy the Midlands to its fullest, you need to spend more than just a few days here. The Midlands Meander, the first route of its kind in the country, is a wonderfully refreshing mix of over 150 places where you can eat, drink and shop, and extends from Rietvlei and Curry’s Post to Dargle Valley and Fort Nottingham - 80 kilometres of activity. The region is a myriad waterfalls, lakes, dams, Zulu cultural villages, game reserves and historical battle sites. It was here that the Boers fought the British and the Zulu Impis fought both! The magnificent Howick Falls provide picnic facilities. Trout and bass fishing are plentiful and for the more adventurous there is paragliding off Bulwer Mountain or a cable slide across the canopy of Karkloof's indigenous forests. The Midlands' most striking physical feature is the majestic Valley of a Thousand Hills - the view is breathtaking and the vegetation simply delightful.
