Mozambique (or officially the Republic of Mozambique) is a country in southeastern Africa. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Zimbabwe to the west and South Africa to the southwest. Mozambique is one of the continent's rising stars, with an upbeat atmosphere, friendly people and overflowing markets. It's dirt cheap to backpack your way around the country and there are lots of stunning places to visit. Its 2500km coastline is famous for some of the most sublime unspoiled beaches and magical offshore islands. For a fantastic scuba diving or snorkeling experience, head off to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Sail on a dhow through mangrove channels, laze under the palms in the Quirimbas Archipelago or take an off-beat safari and experience the wildlife of the Gorongosa National Park. The capital of Maputo is a vibrant city with charming cobbled streets, stately colonial-era buildings and bustling sidewalk cafés. Southern Mozambique is the more accessible (and therefore tamer) part. Roads and transport links – especially with neighbouring South Africa – are good and there are plenty of accommodation options. The more adventurous traveler can head across the Zambezi River into the wilds of Northern Mozambique, one of Africa’s last frontiers. Getting around there takes time, but the coastal panoramas and sense of space will make your journey well worthwhile.
