An hour's drive from Cape Town you'll find the fairest Cape's best kept secret: the Overberg (translated it means 'over the mountain'). Pick one of two equally scenic routes to get there. The N2 highway climbs to dizzy heights via Sir Lowry's Pass before descending to and through a pleasant countryside of orchards, wheat fields and vineyards. The alternative route takes visitors from the town of Gordons Bay along a steep but breathtakingly beautiful coastal road carved from the sea cliffs, to the bustling town of Hermanus before turning inland. The Overberg is blessed with a great expanse of beautiful and diverse landscapes. The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is home to a large number of flowering plants, many of which are only found here. This region boasts some of the finest whale watching spots in the world. Between June and December people flock to Hermanus, where they assemble along cliff paths to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants - sometimes from as close as 30 metres. In the warm waters of Gansbaai you'll find the Great White shark. Cage diving with these wonderful beasts is an exhilarating and highly recommended experience. Yet it is the lesser known villages of the Overberg that deliver unexpected jewels. The Overberg fruit route leads you through the scenic apple orchards and vineyards of Barrydale, Elgin and Villiersdorp. Stop over in Bot Rivier, Grabouw and Stanford to taste the local wines.
