Pretoria – or Tswane, the name adopted by the Metropolitan Municipality that includes Pretoria and surrounding towns – is South-Africa's administrative capital. The city is known for its historic buildings, parks, botanical gardens and leafy suburbs, where streets are lined with rows and rows of purple-flowered Jakaranda trees (some 70,000 of them!). Pretoria is home to the world's largest correspondence university (UNISA) and is renowned as a centre of research and learning. If this sounds all too boring rest assured...there's plenty to see and do. If wildlife and nature is your thing, head off to the National Botanical Gardens (more than 5000 indigenous plant species) or the National Zoological Gardens (the largest in Africa). An aerial cable way takes visitors to the top of a hill from where the animals can be viewed. For sightseeing visit the impressive crescent-shaped Union Buildings, South Africa's bureaucratic headquarters, Church Square in the city centre and the State Theatre, where concerts are often staged on Sunday afternoons. This lush part of the Gauteng Province is about 50km north of Johannesburg, linked by highways passing sprawling suburbs where glitzy shopping centres, restaurants, clubs and pubs are abound. For scenic day drives from Pretoria, visit the Sterkfontein Caves (a World Heritage Site), the Magaliesberg Hills with its special woodlands beauty and the DeWildt Cheetah Research Centre, about 30km west of Pretoria.
