South of the port city of Durban you'll find the South Coast of the KwaZulu-Natal Province, a stretch of 170km between the towns of Amanzimtoti and Port Edward. This is nothing short of paradise for beach lovers: sunbathing, deep-sea diving and surfing. The subtropical climate allows visitors to enjoy the warm Indian Ocean all year round. Around forty beach resorts line the coast, the most prominent being Umkomaas, Port Shepstone, Margate, Ramsgate and Southbroom. The golden sandy beaches are lined by coastal forests and subtropical vegetation. The water is clean and clear, making this an immensely popular holiday destination during high season, around Christmas and Easter time. Out of season, however, the South Coast is quiet, and one can spend relaxing days at the beach, swimming and surfing or spotting whales and dolphins. Just off the South Coast are the Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks - two popular deep-sea diving haunts. Both are frequented by large shark populations, with Protea being ranked as one of the top shark diving sites in the world. Adrenalin-junkies must stop over at the Oribi Gorge (27km long and 400m deep) for world's highest bungee swing – a heart stopping, 33-storey jump from the top of Lehrs Falls. Not enough excitement? Then attempt the world's highest natural commercial abseil, take the Wild Slide across the gorge, white water raft or hike the edge of the Oribi.
