As its name suggests, the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape is an untamed wilderness. It is an incredible, unassuming combination of breath-taking coastline, craggy cliff faces, wild and desolate beaches, secluded bays and green rolling hills that rush headlong into deeply etched river valleys. Some 18 rivers find their way into the ocean along this strip! Sounds like paradise for travelers? Well, it is. There’s a wide range of accommodation, from fisherman’s hideaways to stunning hotels (notably the Wild Coast Sun hotel and casino resort), to suit all tastes and budgets. Notable landmarks include Umtata and Qunu (former president Nelson Mandela's birthplace), the centres of Xhosa culture. The Wild Coast is an adventure destination, blessed with sea, sun and endless things to see and do. This is where you will really enjoy swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing. Winter and spring bring game fish but all year round there is good fishing. Deep-sea charters are available as well as rock, surf, fly and spear fishing. Hiking in this region is something special. Don a backpack and experience the beauty of the coast. The Wild Coast Meander and Wild Coast Amble are both hotel hiking trails. The Strandloper is a conventional hiking trail and the Amadiba Trails, operating in the north from Port Edward, is a horse and hiking trail.
