
Soweto – acronym for South Western Township, (located South West of Johannesburg) emerged just after 1900 as a racially segregated area re-locating an emerging black labor force for white companies, especially the gold-mining industries.
Johannesburg “Egoli”, the city of gold, attracted South African’s from all corners of the country, the vast majority of Black African people settled in Soweto. Besides accommodating the working class, Soweto was also home to anti-Apartheid political activists such as Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. Thus, Soweto became a home to political philosophers and has produced some of South African’s greatest leaders.
Take R24 Johannesburg. Take the Durban/Kimberly off ramp and connect thereafter to M2 W Johannesburg. Take thereafter M1 South, direction Bloemfontein/Soweto. Take exit 7 (Booysen road) and keep left. Turn left at the second traffic-light (Mentz Street) and left at T-junction (Ophir Booysen Rd). Drive straight ahead, you will pass the construction of the soccer stadium and then see signs leading you in to Soweto. Keep on driving straight ahead passing the newly built Bus Terminals. Pass Engen petrol station and the Chicken Licken restaurant on your left. After going under the railway bridge turn left into Carr Street. Take second right and second left. There is a mural-painting at the entrance of the backpacker and it is facing a park.
