The beautiful mountainous country of Lesotho (say: Le-sue-too) is nestled like an island in the middle of South Africa. It is a fascinating travel detour from its larger neighbour. Lesotho is known as the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’ and for good reason: the country is a sightseeing destination of note with majestic mountains offering ample opportunities to go hiking, trekking (on the back of a pony!) and mountaineering. The best way to explore Lesotho is by undertaking a pony trek from village to village – the transport of choice for most locals as the ponies are better adapted to the rugged terrain than most 4x4's! The lowland areas (all of which are above 1000m!) offer excellent craft shopping, while the highlands in the northeast and centre feature towering peaks (over 3000m) and breathtaking green valleys. Getting around is easy – ordinary hire cars will get you to most places. Lesotho is an adventure that is rarely experienced in more commercialised destinations around Africa.
