Just off the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal are the Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, two top diving sites where Tiger, Bull and Ragged Tooth sharks as well as dolphins, turtles, moray eels, potato bass, reef and pelagic fish and manta rays can be spotted. The Protea Bank is situated 7.5km straight out to sea from Shelly Beach and incorporate a range of caves, pinnacles, ridges and amphitheatres. The reef lies between 27m and 40m, and is approximately 6km long and 800 meters in width. It has been a favourite scuba diving spot since 1991 when it was first recognised as a prime dive site. Further north towards Durban the Aliwal Shoal is approximately 5km offshore from Umkomaas and is one of the most well known sites on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The main attraction is the Ragged Tooth shark and the best area to spot them is at the Cathedral, a large arch of rock.
