The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is nestled between the Sunshine Coast and the foothills of the Drakensberg. The main town is Pietermaritzburg, home to quaint antique shops, markets, restaurants, art galleries and museums for those travelers with a penchant for shopping and sightseeing. The best option once here is to follow the Midlands Meander, the first route of its kind in South Africa, extending over 80km of activity. It is a refreshing mix of more than 150 places where you can enjoy local and European cuisine at restaurants and sidewalk cafes, embark on a pub-crawling spree or go shopping for local arts and crafts. The Midlands boast a myriad of waterfalls (the magnificent Howick Falls provide picnic facilities), lakes and dams for water-skiing and windsurfing, Zulu cultural villages, game viewing reserves and historical battle sites. Bass and trout fishing are plentiful and for the more adventurous there is paragliding off Bulwer Mountain or a cable slide across the canopy of Karkloof's indigenous forests.
