Soweto is on the outskirts of Johannesburg and is the most densely inhabited urban area in the country with a population of close on a million. It is by far the biggest metropolitan township in South Africa and a trendsetter in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. Soweto is a melting pot of cultures and a major destination for township tours. With restaurants, shebeens (local drinking establishments) and budget accommodation thrown into the mix Soweto is well worth visiting. Guided township tours take you past taxi ranks, sidewalk stalls and muti shops of traditional healers – a sightseeing experience of vibrancy and colour. A visit to a squatter camp (informal settlement), where shopping for local arts and crafts reveals bargains a-plenty, is included, as well as a stop over at Nelson Mandela’s former home – a humble four-roomed house but one of the most visited sights in the country. For a real cultural experience tour operators will take you to a typical shebeen for local township cuisine, ice-cold beer and funky vibes.
