The Addo Elephant National Park is about an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth, South Africa's fifth largest city. It is an excellent destination for game viewing, game drives and outdoor adventure. The Park was proclaimed in 1931 to preserve the once-prolific Cape elephant. It has since been expanded and now boasts habitats ranging from coastal dune fields to semi-desert and stretches over a whopping 3,600 km². The park contains five of South Africa's seven major vegetation zones (biomes) and houses the "Big 7" (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark) in their natural habitat. There are plenty of game viewing roads and waterholes with viewing points. Night game drives is a must if you want to see buffalo and rhino. Horse trails and the Alexandria hiking trial (stretching over two days) offer excellent outdoor adventure.
