Just about an hour's scenic drive from Cape Town you'll be in the Overberg, a region blessed with a great expanse of beautiful and diverse landscapes. The coastal town of Hermanus is where you want to head to first. This is where you'll find unspoiled beaches and cooker waves for swimming and surfing as well as some of the finest whale watching spots in the world. Between June and December people flock to Hermanus to assemble along cliff paths and catch a glimpse of these gentle giants – sometimes from as close as 30 metres. The town has plenty of top-notch restaurants – the seafood is excellent – and decent bars. In the summer months (November–February) Hermanus is swarmed by holidaymakers, and the town transforms into a party zone with a host of live music venues, clubs and bustling markets. For the more nature orientated traveler a leisurely walk along the spectacular cliff path on the ocean's edge is a must.
