The Free State is a province of flat, rolling grassland and crop fields, rising to magnificent sandstone mountains. The capital is the sleepy city of Bloemfontein, South Africa's judicial headquarters. Many beautiful historical buildings make this a sightseeing hot spot, with ample restaurants, pubs and clubs. But the province is ultimately a haven for wildlife – game viewing and game drives are popular activities. In the south, large herds of wildebeest and springbok roam. The north is home to kudu, white rhino and buffalo. The African wildcat, zebra, white rhino and wild dog can be spotted at the Soetdoring Nature Reserve near Bloemfontein. In the northeast, nestled in the foothills of the Maluti mountains, you'll find the magnificent Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the province's prime tourist attraction. This is a sight to behold. The park gets its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on spectacular sandstone cliffs and formations.
