Franschhoek, nestled between towering mountains in the beautiful Cape Wine Region, is home to some of South Africa's best restaurants and finest wines. It is a short scenic drive away from Cape Town – about 45 minutes along spectacular vineyards and high peaks. It is a destination for the hungry and thirsty traveler who appreciates wine tours, wine tasting, excellent restaurants and shopping for antiques or art. The quaint village was founded in 1688 by Huguenot refugees. The French culture remains to this day and can be experienced first hand on wine tours and picnics (the cheese platters are excellent!) at any of the many surrounding wine estates in the Franschhoek valley. The village lends itself to sightseeing and shopping and the oak-lined streets are chock-a-block with local art and craft galleries, antiques shops, bars, trendy coffee shops and fine eateries.
